Attaching Various Mounts
Always attach mounts by hand with a screwdriver. Mounting screws should thread easily. Be careful not to cross thread, and do not force. Never use a power drill or other powered drive to mount accessories. This may damage your kayak.
AG stock screws are 1/4 - 20 x 7/8” length. Stock screws should work well for Scotty and YakAttack mounts. On both brands, we have had reports that the stock screws are “too long” and “too short.” Here are some points to try when fitting up:
Too short?
With the screw seated in your mount, typically you’ll want about 5/16“ - 3/8” protruding from the bottom of the mount.
If the screw seems too short (i.e. cannot connect to threads), be sure to press down firmly. There is some ‘squish’ in the system, so once you get the threads to connect, there’s typically enough room to tighten down (two full threads should do it).
Make certain you have correct alignment. In some cases screws won’t thread in because they are not properly aligned. Sometimes it is best to fit accessories with the boat fully or partially deflated to help ensure correct alignment of screws.
If it is not possible to connect to threads and tighten down your mount, you may have to purchase longer screws.
Too long?
With the screw seated in your mount, typically you’ll want about 5/16“ - 3/8” protruding from the bottom of the mount.
If the screws align correctly, thread in 1/4”+, then stop before your accessory is tight, then your screws are probably too long.
Options:
Use a spacer such as a small flat washer or even a nut under the screw head.
File the screws down a little, especially if the difference is very small.
Buy shorter screws. This can work easily, or be frustrating because hardware stores usually stock screws in 1/4” increments. If your mount requires 1/8” of trimming, you may have to order online to get the right size, or use one of the methods above.
